with Hadley Vogel
Saturday, December 2 | 1-5 PM | $250*
In this 4-hour intensive course, students will learn a brief history of materials and tools used in traditional bookbinding, as well as complete three different bindings: an accordion fold binding, a long stitch binding and a figure 8 stitch binding. Materials to be used in the binding process are 100% cotton rag paper, Buffalo skin, a bone folder, an awl, a needle and Irish linen thread.
*Includes all materials.
For over 20 years the Vogel Bindery has been crafting books entirely by hand using traditional techniques virtually unchanged for 300 years. Approximately forty steps go into the making of a book. Starting with 100% cotton rag paper that is cut, folded and sewn together by hand to become the text block. Ending with the final step of hand-tooling a design in 24 K gold onto the leather cover. Each step is carefully considered and meticulously executed.
Their clients are as diverse as their services, ranging from a private client's wedding album, to a publishing company's 300 presentation bindings, to an interior decorator's wall of faux book spines. They delight in working directly with the client to achieve the right look and feel for that particular project. The Vogel Bindery also provides rare book restoration services to both dealers and private clients.
