Building a Sustainable Business
Building a Sustainable Business curriculum was developed by the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture and is supported by SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education). Business planning is a critical component to any operation and this six week course is focused on developing a business plan for farms and rural business. The course will focus is on the startup of new businesses/farms and expanding current small businesses'/farms operations and skills.
Dates and descriptions for each class are as follows: December 1, 2017 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Introduction to the course Identifying values oValues are critical to the business planning process and help guide your business and personal decision as you move forward. This session helps you identify and prioritize your values and common values.
December 8, 2017 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Prepare the history and current situation section of your Business Plan oThis will include assessing your marketing, operations, human resources and finances for the business. oA SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis will also be completed.
December 15, 2017 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Prepare the vision, mission and goals section of your Business Plan oWe are always envisioning the future, whether its on a long drive or a late night discussion. This session helps get these dreams incorporated into your plan. oShort, intermediate and long-term goals will also be added to your plan.
January 5, 2017 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Developing a business strategy oThis session will focus on marketing, operations, and human resource strategies as a part of your Business Plan. Marketing strategy goes beyond promotion and incorporates product, competition, distribution, pricing, and inventory management. Operations strategy focuses on production and management, regulations and policy, resource needs, etc. Human resource strategy is critical in todays business environment and will focus on labor needs, skills, compensation, communication and labor gaps.
January 12, 2017 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Developing a business strategy.Continued! oThis session will focus on financial and whole farm strategies as a part of your Business Plan. Risk, organizational structure, and the development of a financial plan will be highlighted oLong-term evaluation that includes profitability, liquidity, solvency and risk will be included.
January 19, 2017 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Finish organizing and writing your Business Plan oImplementing and monitoring your plan oConcluding remarks.
