Little Concerts Sandy Johnson with opener Christie Simmons
Though Sandy didnt realize it at the time, her love for country music started when she was a kid listening to her dad play the old-timey songs on the banjo and the fiddle in their small prairie town. When they got a record player the likes of Patsy Cline, Hank Snow and Marty Robbins filled their home with even more music. In her teens and early adult life, Patsy, George, Jim and others took a back seat to the likes of The Eagles and the Rolling Stones, but her classic country roots had taken hold and would continue to influence her musical tastes as time marched on.
It wasnt until well into her adulthood that Sandy was reminded of just how deep the classic country roots had taken hold. Through the kindness, generosity and patience of her music teachers and like-minded musicians, sheI was able to find her voice, and when it did, it came out classic country.
Sandy has recently released a CD of classic country songs entitled Hallelujah for Classic Country.
Christie Simmons is a born-and-bred Calgarian whose original songs seek to capture the joys of the mundane and the magical and give voice to the soft underbelly of life. As one who spent years playing pipes on the highland games circuit, she cant deny Celtic undertones in her music. But its primarily the literary genius of contemporary writers along with strong, intelligent lyrics and raw melodies of the roots/Americana world that inform her songwriting today. Along with playing her originals as a solo artist, Christie plays whistle, guitar, ukulele and sings lead and harmony vocals with the upbeat folk/fusion group My Son Ted.
She has been raised among colourful characters, visual artists and writers who, along with Alberta, the magnificent province she calls home, permit her and shape her songs.
