How Star Wars Saved My Life is a true story about a child from age five to nine who endured and survived sexual and physical abuse at the hands of priests. Using the power of pop cultures iconic Star Wars, this important Canadian play reveals how the film was integral to this childs coping with abuse, giving a sense of hope that good can triumph over evil. With the plays multiple roles all performed by Nicholas Harrison - the playwright himself, How Star Wars Saved My Life advocates for children's rights. As an adult retelling his story of abuse, survival and healing, he provides an inspirational story of hope and human tenacity. Partnered with director/dramaturg Valerie Methot, this production advances education with the promotion of awareness, dialogue and prevention regarding child abuse. Through the play, the silence of this all too often taboo topic is challenged and ultimately shattered. It boldly confronts the issues around abuse and reinforces that victims are not responsible for the abuse they endure. Through the playwright's own experiences, the play takes us on a journey and transformation of post-traumatic growth and courage. With Nicholas on the path to the way of the Jedi and his faithful droid as his companion, we escape into a Star Wars world of healing and inspiration. How Star Wars Saved My Life is a testament to Nicholas's strength and resiliency and how the journey through the Star Wars film(s) helped him grow as an artist, father and compassionate human being. How Star Wars Saved My Life is created thoughtfully, dramatically and theatrically using humour in appropriate moments. This production is supported by a team of theatre professionals: Ken Hollands (technical director/production manager), John Webber (set/lighting designer), Ken Lawson (composer/musician), and Flick Harrison (film maker).
