SOLD OUT: Salon Talks Live: Senator Al Franken with Salon CEO Jordan Hoffner
Salon Media Group, in partnership with Politics and Prose, presents:
Senator Al Franken
discussing his memoir
AL FRANKEN, GIANT OF THE SENATE
"Running for office after a career in comedy: My opponent put everything I'd ever said or written through the DeHumorizer™, a $15 million machine Republicans built using state-of-the-art de-contextualizing technology." - Sen. Al Franken, AL FRANKEN, GIANT OF THE SENATE
AL FRANKEN, GIANT OF THE SENATE, by Al Franken is the story of an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that.
Senator Al Franken has represented Minnesota in the United States Senate since 2009. He was first elected in 2008 and re-elected in 2014. His memoir is about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect.
In this candid personal memoir, the honorable gentleman from Minnesota takes his army of loyal fans along with him from Saturday Night Live to the campaign trail, inside the halls of Congress, and behind the scenes of some of the most dramatic and/or hilarious moments of his new career in politics. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.
Before entering politics, Al spent 37 years as an award-winning comedy writer, author, and radio talk show host and has taken part in seven USO tours, visiting our troops overseas in Germany, Bosnia, Kosovo, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. He's been married to his wife, Franni, for 41 years, many of them happy. They have two children, Thomasin and Joe, and three grandchildren. Senator Franken graduated from Harvard College.
Has Al Franken become a true Giant of the Senate? Franken asks readers to decide for themselves.
Senator Franken will be in conversation with Salon CEO Jordan Hoffner, an accomplished media executive with two decades of news, digital media, traditional media and technology experience. He began his news career as an NBC News researcher at "Today" before rising through the ranks to the broadcast producer for MSNBC's prime time program The News with Brian Williams.
Salon Talks Live is produced by Salon Media Group, and is the sister brand to Salon.com's live daily show, Salon Talks.
Please note: This event will be live-streamed.
