Indy's up and coming, award-winning new works theatre brings yet another one of our bold, classical adaptations to life with Chekhov's masterpiece, The Seagull. The Seagull will star two of Catalyst's most familiar faces: Managing Director, Taylor Cox (Treplev) and Nan Macy (Arkadina) and welcomes back many of our top repertory members, along with some new faces. This raw and biting new adaptation by director Casey Ross promises to be a stunning exploration through the dynamics of a group of artists, their loves, their fears, their lives and their work. "A young girl lives all her life on the shore of a lake. She loves the lake, like a seagull, and she's happy and free, like a seagull. But a man arrives by chance, and when he sees her, he destroys her, out of sheer boredom..."
It is after sunset and a make-shift, homemade stage stands in the outdoor setting of an estate and farm owned by Sorin, a retired civil servant and brother of the famous actress, Arkadina. A lake serves as natural scenery behind the stage when Arkadina arrives for a brief vacation at her brother's with her younger lover, an up and coming writer, named Trigorn. A group of guests, artists...misfits gather to watch a new play, written and directed by Arkadina's son, the timid Treplev, starring a beautiful but vapid young actress, Nina. Through four painful, yet comically human acts, we watch a summer at the lake grow, mend, and destroy. One of the world's most beloved plays, Catalyst promises an empathetic, unflinching and cutting dark-comedy about humanity's gall to dream...and our need for love.
