Great Discussions 2017 is a participatory course designed for those informed and thoughtful people among us who love to engage in real discussion and respectful debate over issues of the day. This course is a forum for exchanging ideas about international and domestic public affairs and America's place in the world.
The subject of this meeting and the next two meetings will be The Four Freedoms.
The Four Freedoms were goals articulated by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 6, 1941. In an address known as the Four Freedoms speech (technically the 1941 State of the Union address), he proposed four fundamental freedoms that people "everywhere in the world" ought to enjoy: Freedom of speech; Freedom of worship; Freedom from want; and Freedom from fear.
This Great Discussion course is a four-part series and we follow next with a discussion of Freedom of Worship. Our guest speaker, Rev. Mike Eggleston will talk to us about religious tolerance and the needs of all religions to be free from undue government restrictions.
Rev. Eggleston is a United Methodist elder who retired to Los Osos in July, 2013 after pastoring seven churches. His two longest pastorates were 10 years at St. Andrew UMC in Santa Maria and seven at Trinity UMC in Los Osos. He has been a member of Peace with Justice and Church and Society teams in the California-Pacific Conference. He has become more invested in environmental issues over many years. Mike is a part time Minister of the Environment and New Ministries at Trinity UMC in Los Osos.
While Paul Worsham's education and career focused on consumer electronics marketing, he has a deep and active interest in world affairs and America's place in the world.
