In Big Band history, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra has long been long recognized as one of the very best. They could swing with the best of them, and no other band could come close to Tommys when it came to playing ballads.
Tommy Dorsey, The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing, was a master at creating warm, sentimental, and always musical moods. Some of the greatest singers of the era sang in this band including Jack Leonard, Jo Stafford and, most famously, Frank Sinatra. Sinatra frequently noted that much of his musical taste and knowledge came from his stint with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.
In the early 1940s the music polls of the day rated the band as the most popular group in the country. The music world lost Tommy at an early age, but his legacy of great music has transcended time. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, under the current leadership of the exceedingly charming Terry Myers, still represents explosive and swinging Big Band entertainment at its very best.
