THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE
Filmmaker & Author Sarah Burns, daughter of Ken Burns, Raymond Santana and Kevin Richardson, two of the Central Park Five, will appear for Q & A and reception following the 7:15 screening of THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE on Wednesday, December 5, 2012.
In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were arrested and charged for brutally attacking and raping a white female jogger in Central Park. News media swarmed the case, calling it "the crime of the century." But the truth about what really happened didn't become clear until after the five had spent years in prison for a crime they didn't commit. With The Central Park Five, this story of injustice finally gets the telling it deserves. Based on Sarah Burns' best-selling book and co-directed by her husband David McMahon and father, the beloved doc filmmaker Ken Burns, this incendiary film tells the riveting tale of innocent young men scapegoated for a heinous crime, and serves as a mirror for our times. (2012, USA, 119 min., color, Blu-ray - Writers/Directors: Sarah Burns, Ken Burns, David McMahon)
"It's still chilling to see how easily The Central Park Five evokes those mad days of urban distrust." - Stephen Whitty, NEWARK STAR-LEDGER
"The central power of the film comes from hearing the accused finally telling their own stories." - Casey Burchby, VILLAGE VOICE
"The film incisively documents a travesty of justice that echoes the infamous Scottsboro Boys railroading of the 1930s." - David Rooney, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
