The Ups and Downs of Being an Air Traffic Controller

Join career air traffic controller and Manager of the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport, Larry Viselli, as we explore air traffic control from the inside. We'll discover challenges and rewards of the occupation; experience some behind-the scenes operations of the Dallas-Ft. Worth ATC Tower; and learn what's really going on when we see TV and movie scenes of darkened control tower action.

Air traffic control is a service provided by ground-based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and through controlled airspace. The main focus of air traffic control is separation, that is, preventing aircraft from coming too close to each other. You'll learn how air traffic control separates aircraft to prevent collisions, organizes and expedites the flow of traffic, and provides information and other support to pilots.

Larry will also share some of his great stories and his thoughts about the future of air traffic control. There will be time for Larry to answer any of your questions.

Larry Viselli has forty five years experience in air traffic control, including Air Traffic Controller and Supervisor at tower and radar facilities including: United States Air Force (various locations); John Wayne Orange Co Tower; Los Angeles Radar Approach Control; Ontario Radar Approach Control; Airrspace and Procedures Specialist Western Pacific Region; Air Traffic Manager Fresno Airport and Dallas-Ft Worth Airport; Air Traffic Operations Manager Southwest Region; and ATC Lead for a NASA sponsored effort regarding unmanned aircraft flying in National Airspace System
