Ex-Cult (Memphis, In the Red), Enemy (LA), Preening
"Memphis-based punk cyclone that no doubt has laid waste to a town near you recently. Chris Shaw lends a sneering, spitting toughness to the proceedings while the band flays riffs in loose, hairy mosh inducing menace behind him, touching on post-punk, psych sprawl, and early 80s hardcore while remaining beholden to none."
Fresh off the release of Negative Growth and a European tour, Memphis punks Ex-Cult are back with a three song single and handful of tour dates. New single "Blurry" is out now.
Hardcore punk LA
PREENING is a slyly antagonizing joyful noise. The Oakland ensemble of Alejandra, Max, and Sam is alive with California blood and a contorted New York impulse à la ZE Records. It is appealingly compacted, an approach that betrays its punk pedigree (Violence Creeps, Flesh World, Uffizi), but its heart is refreshingly free. The saxophone sirens and caterwauls and levitates whole; the painterly drums follow tenacious bass leads. Preening is restless, expressive anxiety to instigate the coming age. Jam demo highlights Big Brain, PO Box, and Secret Police to feel better. Jenn Pelly
