Beyond ramps: Disability, ableism and racial justice (a workshop) June 8, 2017 6-8 pm 1155 Market St. (Lighthouse for the Blind) 10th floor San Francisco, CA 94117
SURJ SF is hosting a powerful workshop by Sebastian Margaret which seeks to unravel how ableism works as a mechanism of white supremacy, capitalism, colonization. and misogyny It devalues disabled* bodies and minds as unnatural, invalid and unworthy across the lines of race, gender, poverty and citizenship. At the same time it grants credibility and true humanity exclusively to able bodied people and as such plays a central role in determining which individuals or communities are deemed the useless eaters, the dangerous, the unfit, or the disposable. Not quite sure what this all means? Not sure how this is can be true and why it's critical to embed anti -ableism into the heart and core of what we do? Please come join us!
The Disability and Racial Justice training will help participants to understand the connections between ableism and racism and will introduce practical tools to increase the accessibility of racial justice and other liberation movements.
Sebastian is a seasoned disability community educator and skilled facilitator who currently works as the Coordinator of the Disability Community Project of EQNM. A proudly Disabled TGNC queer immigrant they are kept deliciously exhausted and hopeful parenting a pair of gorgeous kids; both of who are now taller than them! They are passionate about the validity and glory of imperfect body/minds and eroding the exclusion, segregation and exploitation faced by disabled folks. Sebastian has been inserting / revealing anti- ableism and disability justice issues into and within a myriad of movements and service provision spaces, while also supporting capacity and vibrancy in disability communities for decades.
You can reach Sebastian here: sebastian@eqnm.org
The workshop is free and open to the public. People of all racial, gender, ability and class backgrounds are welcome. The building is universally accessible and children are welcome. To provide a chemical and fragrance free event, we request that participants refrain from the following before or during the event: Smoking; Wearing colognes, perfumes or scented oils; and using chemical based laundry detergents or fabric softeners. We ask participants to wear something that has had limited exposure to the items above. If you have accessibility needs, please email empower.together.consulting@gmail.com or Sebastian at the email above. ASL interpretation will be provided if you RSVP 48 hours in advance and let us know you need ASL interpretation. For the presentation, visuals will be audio described, there are no handouts, and participants will be asked to use their names when speaking (there will be no name tag requirement or usage).
We will be passing the hat to support Sins Invalid's work, to cover the space, interpretation and other costs (as needed) and any additional money raised will all go to support Sins Invalid. You can 'put money in the hat' up front with a "pay-what-you-can" ticket. Sins Invalid, (http://www.sinsinvalid.org/) is a People Of Color led performance project that incubates and celebrates artists with disabilities, centralizing artists of color and queer and gender-variant artists as communities who have been historically marginalized. SURJ has a value of matching any funds we raise with contributions to people of color led organizing, and we commit to raising at least as much as the workshop costs for Sins Invalid, ideally more.
Please RSVP and invite your friends.
