How Matches End Matters- A LOT
MWW is excited to sponsor this early opportunity to learn about a new seminal study of the impact of mentoring relationship endings.
Many formal youth mentoring relationships end prematurely, or before their initial time commitment is met. Not only are such relationships less likely to be effective, they may actually be harmful in some cases. Some early match endings are unavoidable, such as when someone moves unexpectedly, but others can surely be prevented. In order to do so, better understandings of what causes them are needed. In this webinar, Dr. Renee Spencer will present early findings from the Study to Analyze Relationships (STAR), a national study of early match closures she and Dr. Tom Keller are conducting in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Focusing on findings from in-depth qualitative interviews with program staff, mentors, and parents/guardians, we apply Kellers (2005) systemic model of mentoring relationships to examine individual, relational, and organizational factors that contribute to mentoring relationships going awry.
Dr. Spencer will review the findings on Why matches end, Reasons for early endings, How match relationships end, and how participants experience these endings.
