Grace and Glorie by Tom Ziegler. Plays June 2 through 18
The spiritually powerful drama of unexpected connection, Grace and Glorie by Tom Ziegler, opens at the Willits Community Theatre on Friday, June 2 for a three-week run. The storyline focuses on Grace Stiles, a cantankerous old redneck woman, living alone in a remote cabin and facing her death. Her volunteer hospice worker is Gloria Whitmore, recently arrived from New York City where she left behind a successful career as a high-powered lawyer. At first, the two women openly clash, with clear dislike between Graces deep religious faith and Glorias cold practicality. The action unfolds in ways that are initially humorous and then it turns gripping. Who knows how this unusual arrangement will turn out?
Directed by Jim Williams, the show features Kelly Kesey and Hafsa Stewart in the leading roles. Kesey returns to the WCT stage as the edgy corporate fixer, after previously starring as Kitty Fleming in the 2014 hit, Angel of Chatham Square. Kesey brings an amazing depth to her portrayal of the tough woman with a buried and vulnerable past. Stewart has more than 20 years experience on stage and she is perfectly cast as the uneducated religious backwoods woman who, even with her impending death, remains possessed of a generous and edifying practical wisdom.
Director Williams describes the play as timeless in its portrayal of the spiritual side of people, and yet also timely in how it shows where polarizing cultural differences can be overcome and people find common connection. He praises the playwright Zeigler for creating rarely-seen roles for two strong women of Herculean proportions. Given the power of what emerges on stage, there are shocking turns and unexpected consequences. Williams says, The play is ultimately hopeful and shows how humans can transcend their differences and find each other.
