Verses at Work / Maya Osborne / The Mixtape-12th Annual Harlem International Film Festival
VERSES AT WORK
Director: Lucas Mendes

Country: USA, Running Time: 67min

Emcee and actor Malik Work blurs the lines between hip hop and traditional storytelling in this compelling film capturing the urban artists resilience and proclivity to rise, fall, and rise again.

Preceded by

MAYA OSBORNE: CONFESSIONS OF A QUADROON
Director: Barry Mayo
Country: USA, Running Time: 13min

This is the story of the struggles with identity issues faced by a 20 year-old biracial spoken word poet, Maya Osborne.
Maya Osborne is a mixed raced Bard College student who talks about her everyday struggles being the offspring of a white father and a biracial mother (which makes her one-quarter Black; hence, a quadroon). Intra-family dynamics are exacerbated given the complex relationship that Maya has with her parents.

And

THE MIXTAPE: STAY BLACK, BABY!
Director: Jasmine L. Callis
Country: USA, Running Time: 20min

Capturing an exhilarating reflection on Black America, this is a complex portrait of black youth rising, black art glorified, black voices uncovered, black struggle acknowledged and black empowerment revered.

Poetically, each scene elaborates on current political and social issues within the black community -issues that must be recognized for change to encourage growth. Musically driven, The Mixtape: Stay Black, Baby! arrives at a very important time in the country.
