Politics and Prose and Sixth & I Present SHERMAN ALEXIE
Sherman Alexie is an award-winning novelist, poet, and performer. His honors include both the PEN/Hemingway and PEN/Faulkner Awards and the National Book Award for Young People's Literature. His latest work, YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME, is a family memoir  prompted by the death of his mother at age 78. His commemoration includes 78 poems and 78 essays in which Alexie recounts stories of growing up impoverished on the Spokane Indian Reservation, one of four children of parents struggling with alcoholism. He portrays his mother as a strong woman, both loving and abusive, and writes vividly about a complicated family and about the socioeconomic constraints that made life for Native Americans so difficult.
