April 2017 (Albuquerque, NM): Presented by Art of the Song (an independently produced radio show exploring inspiration and creativity). Four outstanding New Mexican singer/songwriters, Paul Hunton, Kevin Herig, Justin Evan Thompson, and Daniel Graves will perform in a unique concert of the in the round variety. The presentation will consist of two hour-long sets: the first in which each artist will take a turn sharing his own material, and a second in which each will take a turn performing and interpreting one anothers compositions. The concert will take place on Sunday, April 30th at Art of the Song Coffeehouse (Sol Acting Academy Performance Space) at 5500 San Mateo Blvd NE. Tickets are $15 in advance through Brown Paper Tickets, and $20 at the door. Doors are at 7:00pm, concert at 7:30. Paul Hunton is an Albuquerque based singer, songwriter, and actor. His original songs are often juxtapositions of dark subject matter over bright and playful music. His narrative voice smacks of Tom Waits (his biggest influence) and Nick cave. Huntons stage presence is theatrical and subdued at the same time, leaning heavily on his dry sense of humor. He plays with a number of bands ranging from bluegrass to jazz and plays a variety of instruments. His strength, however, is without question his ability to push boundaries as an artist and performer. Kevin Herig made his introduction into the ABQ music scene in 2005 as the lead vocalist and songwriter in the band Asper Kourt. Kevin has continued to write songs and perform as a solo musician debuting Give it all away in the Fall of 2013, and following up with his EP "All You Can't Control" in March of 2016. Kevin is also the Founder and Director of Rock 101 New Mexico, a rock n roll based music program that aims to educate and empower Albuquerques youth. Justin Evan Thompson is a songwriter and performer from Albuquerque, New Mexico with an affinity for traditional folk music and the acoustic guitar. His persona and lyrics are as poetic as they are rough around the edges, and both lend themselves to honest and energetic performances. Matthew Finch, Music director at KUNM nailed it when he called Justins music Burley Americana, and the Weekly Alibi wrote that Thompson displays a poetic and knowing take on folk music that can be rousing as well as introspective and compelling.
Daniel Graves is both an eclectic and prolific songwriter from Las Cruces New Mexico. His writing and stage presence smack of Muscle Shoals, Motown, outlaw country, and Greenwich Village all in the same breath. He plays with a variety of outfits (DAMN Union, Raw Dogs, Dan and the Working Band) that range from Rock/Soul to Americana, and his solo performances pull heavily from that background. Graves is a dynamic and forthright performer and writer whose songs belong among the staples of the American music lexicon.
