Barbara Mahany, author of Motherprayer: Lessons in Loving, in Conversation with Heidi Stevens
Writer Barbara Mahany's ability to capture the beauty of small moments, honed as a reporter and writer for the Chicago Tribune, captivated readers of her first book, Slowing Time. Now, she turns her attention to the sacred mysteries of mothering in Motherprayer: Lessons in Loving , with a hope to apply these lessons to the world beyond our own familial bubbles.

In Motherprayer, Mahany generously shares personal love letters on the mysteries and gifts of mothering, interspersed with family recipes and gentle essays, all offering beautiful lessons in how to love, and how to love well. In her bracingly honest style, she captures the ephemeral moments of motherhoodthe hard, the glorious, the laughter, and the tearsand invites readers to pay attention, cradle our loved ones in prayer, and see the sacred lessons in loving.

These stirring meditations bring into sharp focus one essential question: How do we love breathtakingly?

Barbara Mahany is an author and freelance journalist in Chicago, who writes these days about stumbling on the sacred amid the cacophony of the modern-day domestic melee. She was a reporter and feature writer at the Chicago Tribune for nearly 30 years. Mahany's first book, Slowing Time: Seeing the Sacred Outside Your Kitchen Door, has been called a field guide into the depths of your holiest hours. Publishers Weekly picked it as one of the Top 10 religion books for 2014, fall crop.

Heidi Stevens is a journalist at the Chicago Tribune, where she writes the daily Balancing Act column. Her writing focuses on work/life balance, parenting, relationships and body image. She lives in the Logan Square neighborhood with her husband, three children and two dogs. A collection of her columns, Balancing Act: Essays on juggling life, love, and work in a not-always obliging world, is available as an ebook at chicagotribune.com/ebooks.
