Quilting With Your Domestic Quilt Machine
If you'reready to quilt your projects using your domestic sewing machine then sign-up for this workshop. In class you will learn:
-how to set up your machine for free motion -several variations of meander stitching - useful for filling small spaces -to quilt words -to quilt hearts, stars, leaves, feathers,
Cynthia will bring finished quilts showing all of the above shapes to provide ideas for quilting your own quilts.
Here is the supply list.
- sewing machine with straight stitch best if you can drop the feed dogs - ok -if feed dogs can be covered - We can possibly make it work even otherwise - please know how to drop the feed dogs, or use the cover plate. Or bring your owners manual. Front load bobbin style preferred, with bobbin case you are willing to adjust. Drop in will work. Tools needed to adjust bobbin case and change presser foot and needle.
- darning foot for your machine
- if you have an extension table for your machine, bring it it will help a lot
- surge protector .optional but I always use one for my machine. It doubles as an extension cord.
- straight stitch needle plate , if you have one. Please bring your regular needle plate too.
- Machine needles quilting, size 11 or 12 AND size 14
- A few extra bobbins
- Stiletto (I use my seam ripper) and thread cutters or scissors
- Optional machine quilting gloves or secretary finger cots or quilting finger cots
- Thread. NOT hand quilting thread. Hand quilting thread will NOT run through the machine nicely - it does NOT work for machine quilting. Bring several colors of your standard piecing cotton thread (something you know runs through your machine nicely) or rayon. Bring colors which contrast strongly with the fabric in your quilt sandwich. Thus, if your fabric is white or cream, bring several medium to dark values of thread medium to dark blue or green or red or purple or..
- Some practice quilt sandwiches. 8 or so would be good. Better to have a couple too many than not enough. Should be 14 to 16 inches per side, or so. Use an inexpensive solid color fabric on both sides, preferably white or cream cotton. Muslin is fine. You need to be able to see the stitches you are making , clearly. NO PRINTS.
- Use a thin cotton or 80/20 batt. You probably dont need to pin. But you can if you want. If you use an 80/20 or poly batt (NOT preferred) you might need to either spray or pin baste (safety pin NOT straight pins blood does NOT enhance the quilting). I dont like the spray (my machine does not like the spray and what my machine does not handle well I dont handle well !). But you are welcome to use it if it works for you. - Whatever color fabric you use the threads you bring to practice with should contrast strongly.
- plenty of plain paper for drawing - yes you will be drawing simple shapes. If you can write your name, you can do all the drawing we will be doing in class.
- Paper and pen for taking notes.
- Pen for drawing. Something with ink dark enough to be able to see easily.
