LEDGE LIGHTHOUSE tour INSIDE the light aboard Envirolab II
Groton, CT
Share this event:

Ledge Light Station, built in 1909, is one of the most famous lighthouses in America.  Its stately brick structure with mansard roof, makes it unique.  There is no other lighthouse like it. The Ledge Light Foundation tours are the only tours that take visitors INSIDE Ledge Light!

Step on board the comfortable Project Oceanology boat, Envirolab II, and take a pleasant 10 to 15 minute narrated ride to Ledge Light at the mouth of the Thames River in Long Island Sound.  The lighthouse is offshore, surrounded by water on all four sides.  Access does require some degree of mobility, as you step off the boat onto the landing ledge and climb up a stairway to the entrance to the lighthouse.  Once inside, Ledge Light Foundation volunteer tour guides will be on hand to answer questions as you explore rooms filled with informational and historical exhibit panels and photographs.  There's an air conditioned theater where you will watch a compelling documentary film.  You will be free to wander the rooms of the lighthouse, including the light tower at the top, dreaming of what life was like back in the day when keepers lived their secluded lives in the middle of the sea.  There's a room furnished as it would have been when the keepers were there. Maybe you'll even run into Ernie, the resident ghost!  Stop by the gift shop where you can purchase lighthouse related products only available at the lighthouse.  There is a viewing scope offering close-up views of the surrounding area.  There are benches outside circling the perimeter where you can sit and enjoy the best views in town while waiting for the boat to return you to shore.  Your entire excursion will take two and a half hours.

Tours operate in July, August and September.  Click on the drop down menu on the booking page for all tour dates.

Booking your tour helps Ledge Lighthouse!  ALL proceeds ticket and gift shop sales go toward the restoration and preservation of the lighthouse.  The Ledge Light Foundation has no paid employees... we're all volunteers!

All tours are weather dependent.  PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL INBOX prior to departing for the dock.  We will notify you by email if the tour is canceled.

Arrive at the Project Oceanology building, on the UConn campus at Avery Point, 1084 Shennecossett Rd in Groton 30 minutes prior to departure time. Free parking is available in the Project O parking area "D" which is adjacent to the Project Oceanology building.

Wear comfortable clothes and sensible walking shoes.  Food and drink, with the exception of water, is NOT permitted on the lighthouse.  For safety reasons, NO alcoholic beverages are permitted on the boat or at the lighthouse.  There are public restrooms in the Project Oceanology building and aboard the boat, but no public restrooms inside the lighthouse.

Thank you for your support of the 1909 Ledge Light Station.  We look forward to welcoming you aboard,

                                                                The Ledge Light Foundation
