RUDDYGORE - Southern Illinois Premiere
RUDDYGORE, Or The Witch's Curse was Gilbert & Sullivan's 10th collaboration. The Opera House Co. proudly presents the Southern Illinois Premiere of the original 1887 version with all music and dialogue restored to the way it was on opening night 121 years ago.
The Baronets of Ruddygore have been cursed by a witch (a long time ago). The curse stipulates that each Baronet, in his turn, must commit at least one dastardly crime per day or die an agonizing death. To escape his dreadful fate, the latest Baronet disguises himself as a young farmer, Robin Oakapple. Only two people know his true identity - his faithful servant, Old Adam Goodheart, and his half-brother, Richard Dauntless, a jack tar seaman. Robin is in love with the most beautiful maiden in the village, the very picky Rose Maybud, but he is reticent and can't seem to make his intentions known. Rose, a foundling child, acts according to the dictates of a small book of etiquette that was left with her when she was abandoned as an infant. Rose's book say she must not speak until she is spoken to and Robin, who desperately wants to marry her, is prevented by his shyness from speaking up. In one of Gilbert's most topsy-turvy stories Robin's future plans appear doomed when his true identity is revealed. Ruddygore is a raucous send up of high-fallutin' Victorian "mellydramers" where you're never quite sure who's the hero and who's the villian. Endless mirth ensues to the tunes of some of Sir Arthur Sullivan's very best music.
Ruddygore is the original title, but it was altered to "Ruddigore" shortly after opening.
