A Great and Happy People
Few social movements have moved at a pace as breakneck as the movement for civil rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. At least, thats what it can sometimes feel like for those of us who live in the era of colossal and breathtaking political and legal changes for queer citizens. But the struggle for these rights has never been simple and, oftentimes, the victories create more questions than they answer. As both history and recent events demonstrate, hard-fought wins for LGBTQ+ self-determination can be erased almost overnight.
From a few brave, isolated, terrorized individuals working in the decades before Stonewall to an ascendent political powerhouse capable of rallying growing majorities of citizens to its cause, the story of queer Americans is one of long odds and great determination.
