Ocean Acidification
This class will explore the concept of ocean acidification. The oceans get more acidic as they absorb increasing amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which has effects on many types of marine animals. Participants will gain an understanding of how ocean acidification occurs, how it is measured and how it affects marine animals. Hands-on activities will demonstrate the chemical reactions involved in ocean acidification, effects on animals, specifically those that have shells or skeletons made of calcium carbonate, and what the implications are for the Puget Sound ecosystem.
