SITI Thought Center Presents: CAGE CONVERSATIONS
SITI Company is diving into "Theater Piece #1", a new work examining the pervasive influence of the composer/maverick/musician/writer/visual artist/theorist/chess player/anarchist/raconteur/teacher/performer/poet/innovator/mycologist John Cage. The very first stage of this project is entitled "Chess Match No. 5" and will receive its world premiere at the Abingdon Theatre in New York from March 9 to April 2. As part of our research into Cage, SITI is conducting a series of public conversations with individuals whose trajectories have been indelibly marked by the example, the work, and the life of John Cage.
Kay Larson offers a particular and unique insight into John Cage, as his biographer. She has been an art critic and contributing editor (New York Magazine 1980-1994); freelance critic and writer (the New York Times, Vogue, Architectural Digest, and many others); editor (Managing Editor, Curator: The Museum Journal, 2003-2014); and educator (Writing Tutor, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Annandale on Hudson, New York, 2002-2010). Since becoming a staff writer for The Real Paper in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1972, she has written articles and criticism for a range of publications: museum catalogues, art magazines, newspapers, and the popular press. Her award-winning biography, "Where the Heart Beats: John Cage, Zen Buddhism, and the Inner Life of Artists," was published in 2012 by Penguin Press. Anne Bogart will interview Kay Larson for SITI's next Cage Conversation.
