Chocolate has been an integral part of American history. Not only was the cocoa bean discovered in the Americas and brought to Europe by Columbus, but 17th and 18th-century Americans actually saw chocolate as an important part of their everyday diet. Culinary historian and writer Joyce White will explore the rich cultural history of chocolate from its ancient beginnings in Mesoamerica to the present day, with particular emphasis on how it was enjoyed by early Baltimoreans like Homewood's Carroll family.
The presentation will be followed by a hot chocolate reception. Participants will receive take-home samples of five historic chocolate preparations: a 17th-century Aztec-style hot drink, an 18th-century style tart, a 19th-century style Bangor Brownie, a 20th-century milk chocolate truffle and a 21st-century style chocolate incarnation.
