The Mikado
Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado (emperor) of Japan, fled his father's court a year ago to escape marriage with Katisha, an elderly lady. Disguised as a traveling musician, Nanki-Poo met and fell in love with Yum-Yum, the young ward of Ko-Ko, a cheap tailor in the town of Titipu. Yum-Yum, however, was already betrothed to her guardian Ko-Ko, and Nanki-Poo left Titipu in despair. "The Mikado" is one Gilbert & Sullivan's most popular & enduring comic operas.First produced at the Savoy Theatre, London, March 14, 1885. First performance in the United States, July 6, 1885, at the Museum, Chicago.
