How do we transition from a culture of fear to the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible?

Join Gaiacraft and City Repair Calgary in welcoming Mark Lakeman (from The City Repair Project, Communitecture - Architecture, Planning, Design, and Village Coalition in Portland, Orgenon) back to Calgary for a half-day workshop presenting powerful ideas for building resilient communities. Mark will be accompanied by a powerhouse of women who play an active role in building Calgarys community in diverse ways, including Kym Chi of Giggling Chi Tree, Alla Guelber of The Meaningful Work Project, and Lindsay Meads of reGenerate Design.

We will take you on a dynamic learning adventure that will provide a dazzling spectrum of tools for building participatory culture and establishing lasting change.

Add solutionary techniques to your toolkit that will help you to learn more about where you live, create meaningful relationships, strengthen networks and build resiliency locally, for yourself and your neighbourhood.

This workshop offers a sampling of powerful ideas for addressing the negative effects of gentrification while acting as a gateway to further study, networking and expanding your capacity create thriving social and ecological environments.

Together we will:
- Create inclusivity, trust, safety and emotional support in your neighbourhood
- Understand ways to build food security and community connections wherever you are (urban, suburban or rural)
- Touch on techniques for preventing, preparing and responding to emergencies, disaster and complex change
- Explore tips to creating self sustaining communities
- Offer resources and additional information to deepen your learning
- Apply our learnings in fun and creative ways

Are you a changemaker, initiator, organizer, creative collaborator, community builder, activist, or a concerned citizen? You are not alone, come together with other like minded visionaries to inspire, empower, and uplift one another to seize the myriad of opportunities we all have to grow a thriving community.

Bios:

Mark Lakeman is a national leader in the development of sustainable public places. In the last decade he has directed, facilitated, or inspired designs for more than three hundred new community-generated public places in Portland, Oregon alone. Through his leadership in Communitecture, Inc., and its various affiliates such as the The City Repair Project (501(c)3), The Village Building Convergence, and the Planet Repair Institute, he has also been instrumental in the development of dozens of participatory organizations and urban permaculture design projects across the United States and Canada. Mark works with governmental leaders, community organizations, and educational institutions in many diverse communities.

Kym Chi is a creative facilitator, artist, healer, and community builder. She lives on the Sunshine Coast where she teaches and works with One Straw Society, a nonprofit advocating for food sovereignty and community resiliency.

Alla Guelber is an environmental educator, facilitator, and community organizer in Calgary. She is the founder/director of The Meaningful Work Project, a grassroots initiative offering educational programs that help individuals and communities progress toward supporting resilient ecosystems and a thriving local economy.

Lindsay Meads is the founder and co-owner of reGenerate Design in Calgary.  She is an urban designer, engagement facilitator, permaculture designer, and long-time community advocate. She has a background in environmental geology, natural building, city planning, and is also the lead organizer of Calgary Seedy Saturday, Calgarys largest annual local food advocacy event.
