How do we build bridges in the face of adversity and take positive and peaceful action toward creating a just society? Join renowned architect and placemaker Mark Lakeman as well as local guests for a thought-provoking evening focused on reimagining our urban environment as an inclusive, accessible, and unified village.
Mark's work incorporates broad participation, local ownership, empowering local populations, creative expression in planned and unplanned processes, and social capital as the primary economic engine of change. Many of his projects involve restoring dignity to low income and homeless people in the development of sustainable community solutions, most recently with the work of the Village Coalition.
This dynamic gathering will include a number of local organizations showcasing their solutions-oriented approaches to celebrating culture and valuing diversity.

PRESENTER BIOS:
MARK LAKEMAN is a national leader in the development of sustainable public places. In the last decade he has directed, facilitated, or inspired designs for more than three hundred new community-generated public places in Portland, Oregon alone. Through his leadership in Communitecture, Inc., and its various affiliates such as the The City Repair Project (501(c)3), The Village Building Convergence, and the Planet Repair Institute, he has also been instrumental in the development of dozens of participatory organizations and urban permaculture design projects across the United States and Canada. Mark works with governmental leaders, community organizations, and educational institutions in many diverse communities.
KYM CHI is a creative facilitator, artist, healer, and community builder. She lives on the Sunshine Coast where she teaches and works with One Straw Society, a nonprofit advocating for food sovereignty and community resiliency.
ALLA GUELBER is an environmental educator, facilitator, and community organizer in Calgary. She is the founder/director of The Meaningful Work Project, a grassroots initiative offering educational programs that help individuals and communities progress toward supporting resilient ecosystems and a thriving local economy.
LINDSAY MEADS is the founder and co-owner of reGenerate Design in Calgary. She is an urban designer, engagement facilitator, permaculture designer, and long-time community advocate. She has a background in environmental geology, natural building, and is also the lead organizer of Calgary Seedy Saturday, Calgarys largest annual local food advocacy event.
NATALIA ZOLDAK
Natalia Zoldak is an urban designer and planner. She is an organizer for Great Public Spaces a CivicCamp group involved in reclaiming underutilized public spaces and turning them into vibrant, meaningful places.

PANELISTS
We are proud to welcome some outstanding local leaders to our discussion panel, including:
DEBBIE NEWMAN, the Executive Director of the Calgary Drop-in and Rehabilitation Centre (The DI). With a background in social work, Debbie has worked in the government sector for 7 years, in Alberta and Ontario. She has been The DI's Executive Director since 2010.
The DI provides shelter, housing, and wrap-around supports to Calgarys most vulnerable people those experiencing homelessness and those struggling through extreme poverty.
With more than 50 different programs and services, The DI strives to meet people wherever they are, and help them get to wherever it is they want to go. Whether that means a couple of meals and a place to sleep at night, finding access to much needed government assistance, or a goal to find permanent supportive housing, the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre is where many lives begin.
ROD OLSON owns and operates Leaf & Lyre Urban Farms, Calgary's first SPIN farming enterprise. He is affectionately known as the "Rodfather" among his local farmer cooperative, YYC Growers and Distributors. Rod is passionate about protecting and nurturing the microscopic living soil community beneath our feet. He lives the deep connection between humus and humans. His starting point for inclusivity is the fact that we are all connected to the soil.
Born and raised in Calgary, AMANDA KOYAMA has spent the majority of her professional career in the non-profit sector, with a focus on access and engagement. Amanda brings to her roles more than 10 years of experience as a manager, fund developer, community leader, and volunteer. As a strategic thinker, collaborative decision-maker, and an accomplished communicator, Amanda is often solicited to provide Board and Committee leadership and strength in varying community networks. Some of her engagements include: Calgary 2012, Calgary Arts Development, Slow Food Calgary, and The Calgary Foundation. Amanda has worked with Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) in a number of different roles since 2004, and currently serves as the Manager of the Family and Children Services division of CCIS.
KEVIN JESUINO is a Portuguese-Canadian interdisciplinary artist working in mediums of live performance, digital media and public participatory practices. Kevin is a Community Arts Facilitator for Antyx Community Arts, a community arts company that uses the arts and community development processes to create opportunities for youth to become more engaged in their community and experience increased community connection. Antyx works in communities across Calgary. Antyx community arts projects can have a neighborhood focus or they may be focused on addressing community identified issues. Arts are used in development processes to build community capacity and to creatively and critically engage people in processes that address important community issues.
