Miss Sharon Jones Tribute Screening
Miss Sharon Jones! captures the irrepressible spirit of a true giant of the music world. Sharon Joness powerful, energetic performances often (deservedly) drew comparison to James Brown. But despite her incredible talent and stage presence, Joness music career struggled as she was kept in the wings by a music industry that branded her too short, too black, too fat. After decades of working odd jobs, she had a career breakthrough in middle-age, joining forces with Brooklyn R&B outfit The Dap-Kings.
In 2013, on the eve of the release of her much-anticipated album Give the People What They Want, Sharon was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This triumphant, crowd-pleasing documentary followed Ms. Jones through the most intense and courageous year of her life, as she battled back from cancer diagnosis and treatment to center stage.
She will be missed and remembered through her music.
