The Bad Plus
The Bad Plus have, over the course of fourteen albums, earned a reputation for being one of the most forward-thinking trios in jazz, combining idiosyncratic originals with inspired left-field covers. Their new album, Its Hard, includes songs written by Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Ornette Coleman and Johnny Cash, yet they all flow together in a cohesive rhythm. The combination of bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson and drummer David King creates a group that is better than anyone at mixing the sensibilities of post-60s jazz and indie rock as written by Rolling Stone. Founded under the premise that music can be as engaging and accessible as it can be provocative, The Bad Plus continue to simultaneously solidify and expand their musical ethos with each new chapter.
