The Physicists by Friedrich Durrenmatt
the most lively concept of the Absurd
Friedrich Dürrenmatts The Physicists

A Script-in-Hand Reading, One-Night Only
Monday, December 5, 2016 @ 7:30 pm
@ The Drake Theater

The Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium, Philadelphias premiere absurdist theater company, will feature The Physicists, a seldom-performed work by German playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt in a script-in-hand reading on Monday, December 5 at 7:30 pm at The Drake Theater in Philadelphia.  This is a free event, though tickets are encouraged and can be ordered at Brown Paper Tickets @ http://thephysicists.bpt.me.

The Physicists will be directed by Seth Rozin, Producing Artistic Director, InterAct Theater Company, and will feature Philadelphia  performers Ames Adamson, Daniel Kim, Sabrina Profitt, Leonard Haas, Peter Schmitz, Susanne Sulby, Isa St. Clair, Brandon Pierce, Ben Behrend, Tina Brock and Bob Schmidt.

The Physicists is a darkly comic satire by one of the worlds foremost German dramatists and author of the internationally acclaimed The Visit.  First performed in Zurich in 1962, The Physicists tells the story of the Johann Wilhelm Mobius, the worlds greatest physicist, currently living out his days in a madhouse where he is haunted by visions of King Solomon. He spends his days with two equally deluded scientists  one who believes he is Einstein, the other, Newton.  Add to this treacherous combination the world-renowned psychiatrist-in-charge Mathilde von Zahnd, who has diabolical plans of her own, and havoc ensues. The Physicists probes beneath the surface of modern existence and questions whether it is the mad who are truly insane.

The New York Times described The Physicists as continually intriguing and entertaining...bursting across the stage like firecrackers...

2016 marks The Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortiums tenth season presenting rarely produced absurdist gems from authors around the globe. Known for their humorous and thoughtful interpretations of seldom seen works, the IRCs 2016 season has included critically-acclaimed sold-out productions of French playwright and father of absurdism Eugène Ionescos The Chairs and Nikolai Gogols The Government Inspector.

The IRC is a 501C3 non-profit organization, and a member of The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and a participant in the Barrymore Awards, a program of Theatre Philadelphia.  The IRCs 2016 season is funded in part by generous grants from from Wyncote Foundation; The Samuel S. Fels Fund; The Philadelphia Cultural Fund; The Charlotte Cushman Foundation; The Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, with support also provided by PECO and administered regionally by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and the Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia.
