Paris Noir: Tyler Stovall on African American expatriates
Renowned historian and UC Berkley professor, Dr. Tyler Stovall writes about the inversion of the American myth of success: a group that had to leave the States in order to make good.

They were African-American expatriates: writers, musicians, artists, scholars, scientists, and businessmen who made new lives for themselves in Paris. Dr. Stovall looks at African-Americans historical affection for Paris in the 10th century. This lecture covers figures like Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Josephine Baker, Sidney Bechet, and Kenny Clarke.
