Rudresh Mahanthappa Bird Calls
Few musicians have remained as influential on so many generations of players and fans as Charlie Parker, and few contemporary saxophonists are more cutting edge than Rudresh Mahanthappa. Known for a series of acclaimed albums exploring the music of his South Indian heritage through modern jazz, his new project pays tribute to Parker. Its easy to say that Bird influenced modern music without dissecting that notion says Mahanthappa, and the new album Bird Calls seeks to demonstrate that. Its a non-traditional tribute, as the album contains no Parker compositions. Rather, the tribute lies within Mahanthappas original compositions inspired by particular Parker melodies or solos. He will be joined on this date by Adam OFarrill on trumpet, Joshua White on piano, Thomson Kneeland on bass and Dan Weiss on drums.
