A Day at Stateville
"People still carry lifetime sentences on their backs," says Jim Chapman of Changing Minds Campaign. Written by Stateville inmates with life sentences who took Chapman's Life Transformation through Communication course at the prison, the play allows the inmates to reach out and enlighten a community they are no longer a part of. Performed by former inmates, the staged reading is followed by a dialogue that allows audience members to interact and experience the life of an inmate at Stateville Prison.
The play is presented at Clockwise Theatre and co-produced by F.I.S.T. (Former Inmates Striving Together) and Changing Minds Campaign.
"We want to enroll you in our struggle, to touch, move and inspire you to join with us to change these failed prisons. Don't tell us about the prison industrial complex. We are its product. And now the complex is falling apart. This is a story of hope, faith. We don't ask for sympathy. We ask you to work with us. The time for real struggle starts now. Both inside and out - together!" ~from the introduction of "A Day at Stateville"
