The Last Leper of Charenton
A web of madness entangles a leper, a melancholic, and a syphilitic angel as they wrestle for control over the idyllic Charenton hospital.

The Schoolyard, a young theater focusing on both irresistible and original work, is proud to present the world premiere of The Last Leper of Charenton at The Ballard Underground, Fridays and Saturdays, August 24 through September 8, at 8 p.m, with an Industry night Monday August 27 at 8pm.

In 1671, Science and Medicine are infants, and Psychology is not yet a word. The spirit world is dying, leprosy has a cure, and treatment of the mad at first seems plausible. But Charenton is teetering on the edge of a transition from religious hospital to insane asylum, and the new medicine is dangerous in the hands of charlatans.

Seattle playwright Todd van der Ark (Sophocles' Ajax, 2011) has written a completely original ensemble romp, delving into the schizophrenic battle between science and spirituality. Director Gary Zinter (The Cut, The Private Lives of Eskimos) breathes magic into the maelstrom with cast Michael LaDell Harris (Orphans, The Cut) David Rollison (The Cut), JenRenee Paulson (The Rocky Horror Show), Kenna Kettrick (Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, The Rocky Horror Show), and Dustin Engstrom (HP Lovecraft: The Colour Out of Space, RUR).
