A little more details about our speakers and their presentations:

"Shade Trees of the Northeast" by Donald Leopold.
Professor Leopold is known to many of us as the author of Native Plants of the Northeast: A Guide for Gardening and Conservation (Timber Press, 2005.)    Dr.  Leopold has been studying native plants for nearly 30 years. He earned his Ph.D. in forest ecology from Purdue University in 1984, his master's in forest ecology from the University of Kentucky in 1981, and a B.S. in ornamental horticulture and nursery management from the University of Kentucky in 1978.
In 1985, he joined the Faculty of Environmental and Forest Biology at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York. He has taught courses in dendrology, plant materials, freshwater wetland ecology, and numerous graduate seminars on conservation and restoration topics.  Currently, he is Distinguished Teaching Professor at SUNY. Dr. Leopold has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, four other books, six book chapters, five book reviews, three proceedings, and many miscellaneous publications, all generally about topics in forest and wetland ecology.  Dr. Leopold's book will be available for sale and signing at our event.

"Trees to Plant in the Era of Climate Change" by Steve Schuckman.
Steve Schuckman is a New Jersey Certified Tree Expert and currently the town arborist for Montclair, Glen Ridge and Bloomfield.  Steve earned his Masters of Botany at the University of Missouri at Columbia.

"New Jersey's Understory Trees" by John Stella.
John Stella, with Wm. F. Hammell Nurseries, graduated from Delaware Valley College with a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture.  He has 25 years of experience working in the nursery industry, including some of the largest and most established growers on the East Coast.

"Threats to NJ Native Trees" by John Cambridge
John Cambridge graduated from Rutgers University with a BS in 2012 and is currently working on a graduate degree in Entomology and Public Health from Rutgers and UMDNJ respectively.  He has been working with New Jersey Department of Agriculture Asian Longhorned Beetle project since February of 2012.  His talk will be on the invasive forest pests of New Jersey and will mainly focus on Emerald Ash Borer, Asian Longhorned Beetle, and Sirex Woodwasp.  Listeners will learn about the history of introduction, life cycle, known distribution, and current suppression protocols for these invasive species.  Free educational literature will be made available after the talk.  There will be time for Q&A at the end as well.

"Enriching the Ground Layer:  Luscious Native Herbaceous Plant Companions" by Rick Lewandowski
Each plant in the garden provides its own unique functional and aesthetic value.  Herbaceous plants bring the ground layer to life, adding textures, colors and seasonal beauty.  In addition to the suite of commonly available plants, there are also many excellent underused native plants that deserve wider use in our landscapes.  Expand your "lustful" list of garden plants and rediscover an appreciation for some old favorites. Rick Lewandowski is a seasoned horticulturist, lecturer, teacher, plant explorer, naturalist, writer, manager, consultant, and designer with more than 30 years of professional experience. He is also a principal in Turner- Lewandowski Environmental Design, a landscape design and environmental consulting team focused on creating/preserving landscapes of natural beauty and functional value. Rick was named the Director of Mt. Cuba Center for the Study of Piedmont Flora where he led the staff and Board of Managers for 11 years through the transformation of the private estate to a not-for-profit horticultural organization focused on native plants of the Piedmont and eastern U.S.

The Native Plant Society of New Jersey is dedicated to the appreciation, protection and study of the native flora of New Jersey.
