I-735 Amending the Constitution Panel Discussion: Corporate Personhood, Money as Speech and the State of Our Democracy

The Yes on Initiative 735 campaign is excited to sponsor a special keynote address from Nina Turner and a panel discussion on how the undue influence of money is affecting our political system. Topics to be discussed included how court decisions such as Citizens United got us here, how corporate personhood and money as speech came to be, and how amending the Constitution is a viable option to help restore democracy and bring power back to the people.

This will be an informative and engaging forum featuring national and local leaders working on this important issues.

Keynote Speaker:
Nina Turner, State Senator, Ohio (2008-2014) - Nina Turner is a leader, speaker, and advocate. Known for speaking truth to power, Turner served as state senator for Ohios 25th district as well as the minority whip in the Ohio Senate. Sen. Turner was a prominent supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders Democratic campaign in 2016, and served as surrogate on several occasions. She is a strong advocate for the 28th Amendment to overturn Citizens United. Her passionate advocacy has earned her regular appearances on national television and radio programs and accolades from numerous national organizations.

Panel guests include:
Jeff Clements - Moderator for the evening - Jeff Clements is the President and Founder of American Promise. He authored Corporations Are Not People: Reclaiming Democracy
From Big Money & Global Corporations. He is a co-founder of Free Speech For People, a national non-partisan, non-proft campaign to strengthen American democracy and founder of Whaleback Partners LLC, which provides sustainable financing to the local agriculture economy.

John Bonifaz - Co-Founder and President of Free Speech For People. He has been at the forefront of key voting rights battles for more than two decades, and has also served as co-counsel in international human rights and environmental litigation, notably holding Chevron-Texaco oil company accountable for its widespread destruction of the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Derek Cressman - Served as Democracy Program Director for Public Interest Research Group, where he was the first professional advocate in Washington, D.C. to support an amendment in favor of limiting campaign spending. He is also the author of When Money Talks.

Aquene Freechild - Campaign Co-Director of Public Citizen's Democracy Is For People Campaign. She co-leads Public Citizen's work building a broad movement to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling and to get big money out of politics.

Cindy Black - Currently serves as Campaign Director for WAmend's Initiative 735 and the new Executive Director of Fix Democracy First. She worked as a volunteer on WAmend's I-1329 and I-735 signature gathering campaigns prior to becoming director. She also worked as a grassroots organizer on I-522 to label GMOs.

We will also be hosting a silent auction and reception prior to the event from 5:30 - 7:00 pm.
