Taste of Philly Food Tour (Fall-Winter 2012)
Philly is famous for its cheesesteaks, hoagies and pretzels. Learn the story behind these and other local food favorites, and the vibrant and historic Reading Terminal Market where they're sold during this 90-minute Market-based walking tour. Also see pretzels being twisted, hear the story behind the Breyers Ice Cream logo and find out where Milton Hershey got the idea for Hershey's Kisses -- in other words, fun history that has nothing to do with our government! Tour was written and is frequently led by food writer Carolyn Wyman, the author of the definitive "Great Philly Cheesesteak Book" (Running Press), "Spam: A Biography" (Harcourt) and "Jell-O: A Biography" (Harcourt), featured on NPR's "Fresh Air," "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" and "Jay Leno."
Note: This ticketing space is ONLY for SATURDAY tours. The Taste of Philly Food Tour is also offered at 10 a.m. Wednesdays year-round, but the reservation process for Wednesday tours is different. To make reservations for a Wednesday tour, call 215-545-8007 x3 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org with the Wed. date you would like to take the tour, the number in your party and a phone number (cell or hotel) where we can reach you the day before the tour to confirm your Wednesday reservation. Also use that number and email address to schedule a private group tour (available at other days and times). All reservations for the regular 10 a.m. Saturday tours should be made here.
Ticket price of $15.95 for adults or $8.95 for accompanying kid includes several small food bites and the "Philly Insider Eats Sheet," a guide to local restaurants. Or select the $32.95 "Book plus adult admission" option on the drop-down menu for a copy of the "Great Philly Cheesesteak Book" signed by the author plus the tour (book to be picked up at tour start, and not mailed). No charge for kids younger than 7.
Plan time before or after the tour to eat a meal and explore the Market on your own. Reduced rate parking available at the Parkway Garage, 12th and Filbert (entrance on 12th between Arch and Filbert) with a $10 Market purchase. Advanced reservations required for all tours and are the only way to guarantee your spot.
Miss the Brown Paper Ticket 8:30 a.m. deadline for the tour? Call 215-545-8007 up to one hour before the tour start to check last-minute availability. Also use this number to schedule a private group tour at other days and times. Sales are final and nonrefundable except in the rare case that we cancel a tour. FOR THIS REASON PLEASE BE SURE TO PROVIDE A CELL OR OTHER PHONE NO. WHERE WE CAN REACH YOU LAST-MINUTE WHEN YOU ARE INPUTTING YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION ON THIS SITE. Reading Terminal is a covered, indoor market that is heated in the winter and air-conditioned in the summer and so tours are held rain or shine.
