F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C! That's the only way to spell this Tony Award-winning musical comedy. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is the story of how six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. This hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicles the experience of six contestants vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is a riotous ride, complete with audience participation!
Sweet and shy Olive Ostrovsky brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; Bold and hyper-allergic speller William Barfee uses his magic foot to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip Tolentino is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf Coneybear is unconvinced that hes smart enough to be a challenger; ultimate overachiever Marcy Park is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne SchwartzandGrubenierre only wants to impress her dads. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home life, the tweens spell their way through a series of words hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box!
