From 27 Rue de Fleurus to the Pardee Home Carriage House; The Afternoon Salon continues!
Paris in the 20's was the capital of bohemian culture. The city had long been famous for its philosophical intrigues and artistic inspiration, its avant-garde tastes and flamboyant personalities. The inter-war period saw the rise of Montparnasse as the hub of the citys artistic community, its bars and cafés resounding to the pulse of hot jazz music and intellectual debate. Art collectors Leo Stein and his sister poet/writer Gertrude were part of the expatriate scene, opening their home to the artistic community and the "Lost generation". Theirs was perhaps the first gallery where people came together to see the first collection of Modern Art.
Sunday, September 11th, 2016 at 4:00pm at the Pardee Home Museum, 672 11th Street Oakland (please enter through the Carriage House on 12th Street).
We shall attempt to re-create the energy of that salon, but with a 21st century sensibility! With Gertrude Stein & Alice B. Toklas expert and author Hans Gallas, writer Kitty Hughes, Oakland historian Dennis Evanosky, Isadora Duncan dance devotee, Lois Flood and artist/author Robert Fischer - all will discuss the passion of those Americans living in Paris. We'll express our appreciation for this fashionable coterie of friends, who came together at an extraordinary time:
- Kitty Hughes will read an essay "A Tale of two Cities, from the award winning anthology, "Wandering in Paris".
- Robert Fischer will talk about his 40 year love affair with Isadora Duncan and his just released "Loisadora, Long Day's Dance into the Night".
- His muse and Duncan devotee, Lois Flood, founder of Diablo Dance Theater will talk about Duncan, the feminist and revolutionary and why 23 years ago she left ballet to become a disciple of the work of the "Mother of Modern Dance".
- Hans Gallas will play interlocutor in the midst of this afternoon soiree!
- Dennis Evanosky will share his view of how Oakland affected and influenced these people's destiny!
