Spring Rolls and Coconut Soup: An Urban Food Social
Join us for Southeast Asian cuisine and its tongue-sparking, irresistible flavors of lime, coconut, lemongrass, and chilies. You'll taste our house-made five-spice in the Spring Rolls with Sweet Chili Dipping Sauce, and young ginger in the Gin Thoke (a traditional Burmese salad). The Coconut Noodle Soup combines lemongrass and turmeric with cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice. As always, much of our produce comes fresh from the garden at Whittier Backyard Farms.

- Spring Rolls with Sweet Chili Dipping Sauce (Kawpyan)
(Light, refreshing rice-paper-wrapped rolls with vermicelli, cucumber, chard ribbons, and jackfruit crab)

- Ginger Salad (Gin Thoke)
(Lime-soaked shredded ginger, sesame seeds, and tomatoes, mixed with fried lentils and garlic)

- Coconut Noodle Soup (Ohn No Kyawswe)
(With house-made coconut milk, lemongrass, turmeric, and lime)

- Avocado Ice Cream (Butter Fruit)
(Evaporated sweet cashew milk with buttery avocado)

Burmese Cuisine 101: The food of Myanmar (formerly called Burma) is the offspring of Thailand, India, and China - three formidable and much-loved cuisines.

That's why, in this week's meal, you'll taste our house-made Chinese five-spice in the Spring Rolls with Dipping Sauce as well as young ginger and delicately fried lentils in the Gin Thoke, a traditional Burmese salad. The Coconut Noodle Soup combines significant ingredients from all three cultures: Noodles (China), lemongrass (Thailand), and turmeric (India).

The avocado, known as "butter fruit" in Southeast Asia, makes a popular milkshake or ice cream in Myanmar. We're sure you'll love our buttery, creamy vegan version of this classic dish.

How We Shop

Local, organic, vegan: The primary produce supplier for the Tuesday Dinners is Whittier Backyard Farms, a small start-up farm group in Whittier, CA. Their farming methods are what's known as "beyond organic" -- they create their own compost (including kitchen scraps from the Tuesday Dinners), procure mulch and chicken manure from other urban farms, and sow only heirloom seeds -- chemicals aren't even in the discussion. We're pretty pleased to support them, and to serve you their excellent produce!

This week's menu includes chard, carrots, scallions, yellow squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, limes, lemons, and lemongrass from Whittier Backyard Farms. (Also, thank you Fred Portillo for backyard chili peppers and RocĂo Romo for avocados!) For more information: info@whittierbackyardfarms.com.

Retailers we buy from in order of frequency: Herbie's Natural Foods in Whittier, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Figueroa Produce. Culturally specific ingredients come from ethnic markets. Wild ingredients are harvested by hand, by us. We've also heard a rumor that Whittier Backyard Farms has some seed starts for wild foods...we'll keep you posted!

Join our volunteer kitchen crew: Purchase a volunteer dinner ticket for $5 by Monday, July 9. Arrive at the kitchen at 4:30PM and we'll show you what to do from there!

Dinner is held every Tuesday at 7:30PM. But starting August 5, the Tuesday Dinners move to Sunday and get a new name! Stay tuned for more details.
