Coriolanus at Bard Fest
Located in Carmel's charming Arts District, Bard Fest Indy brings together 3 local companies to create 3 unique Shakespeare shows. Bard Fest was founded in 2015 by these companies to bring a professional quality, yet intimate, Shakespeare festival experience to central Indiana. Through our partnership with The Carmel Theatre Company, Bard Fest is able to not only provide paying work for local area actors, but also provide 3 unique visions under one intimate roof.
This year, Catalyst Repertory (formerly CRP) bring Shakespeare's Coriolanus to Bard Fest.
In Rome, in the aftermath of a war induced famine, the common people demand the right to set their own price for basic food rations and water. In response to their protests, the ruling aristocracy grant the people two disconnected representatives, or tribunes--a decision that provokes the sharp tongue of the young and proud soldier, Caius Marcius, who has nothing but contempt for the lower classes he's worked to avoid. When war breaks out with a neighboring Italian tribe, led by Martius' great rival, Tullus Aufidius, the campaign that follows leads to Aufidious' defeat. Marcius and the Romans takes the Italian city of Corioli and, in recognition of his great deeds, he is granted the name Coriolanus. In order to gain public office, a position his men now almost demand he takes, he must go out and plead for the votes of the commoners---a task that he undertakes, reluctantly. The common people's confusion and uncertainty allows the prodding of the two clever tribunes, Brutus and Sicinius, to make Coriolanus out to be the enemy of the common man. This drives the proud Coriolanus into a fury, and he speaks out intemperately against the very idea of popular rule; Brutus and Sicinius, seizing on his words, declare him a traitor to the Roman state and drive him into exile. Desiring revenge against Rome, Coriolanus goes to his old enemy, Aufidius, and makes peace with him. Joining bitter rivals, together, against the hierarchy of Rome...
