FREE Life of the Merchant Mariner Tour Aboard the Schooner Adirondack
What does it mean to work on the waterways? Join Rev. David Rider from the Seamen's Church Institute to explore the history and current issues facing the merchant mariner. Increased commerce and containerization on the New York/New Jersey port greatly influenced the lives of seafarers. Through the eyes of the merchant mariner, Rev. Rider will discuss piracy threats, ship types, and the changing identities of seafarers. The Seamen's Church Institute (SCI) is North America's largest and most comprehensive mariners' service agency, promoting safety, dignity, and improved working and living conditions for millions of men and women serving in the maritime workplace. Founded in 1834, the Institute is a voluntary, ecumenical agency affiliated with the Episcopal Church.
Plan to arrive at Governors Island at least 45 minutes before your tour to allow time to participate in the City of Water Day festival and make your way to Yankee Pier. Please arrive to Yankee Pier approximately 30 minutes before departure time. Tickets that remain unclaimed 15 minutes before departure will be made available to standby passengers.
