Title: Memoirs Of A Single Father
Stage play written by Darrell Mitchell

Act 1 - Crossovers and car seats

Act 2 - Friends, dreams and death

Act 3 - What goes around come around

Life has a way of surprising you no matter how much you try to stick to a plan. A lesson is learned when I, as a promising young athlete had been offered a basketball scholarship after investing hours of practice and hardwork into off season camps & year round leagues. It was a dream come true to a young quiet inner city kid such as myself especially coming from a single parent home, but that wasn't the only choice i had to make.

Imagine the last relationship you were in, and that it ended 8 months prior to current life happenings.. (For me, life happenings was the scholarship situation)
As the days passed from the break up, there is no communication, you 2, are individuals, you are exes, living your separate lives, doing your own thing....
Yeah.... Or so I thought. In all actuality in my situation, we were connected, yet this connection was not revealed to me until after a decision that affected my life had already somewhat been made. I was a father.. I had a baby, a daughter a legacy.... Wild huh?

In a turn of events, and to my surprise I found out how easy it would be for me "Not to be a father"
Wait, that's not how it works. Right... You become a father and the world wants you to be responsible, right??? Not so much... In my situation, I was advised to do the complete opposite.....

When you want to be an adult you will have to make adult decisions and the consequences come along with that. It may sound like a simple "man up" situation and I was all for doing exactly that. I was fearful, not sure everything that entailed. But I was ready to figure it out. I however, was offered with the choice to walk away and pursue a basketball career instead of being a father to my child. Let me explain...

Both, the lawyer that assisted with presenting my case before the judge and the presiding judge offered me the opportunity to give my daughter up for adoption and allow social services to place my her in a foster home. I was absolutely shocked and I couldn't believe what I was hearing, they actually tried to get me to walk away from being a Dad. I'll never forget those words,
"Are you sure you want this responsibility, you don't have to do this, you can just walk away right now"
The judge even had the nerve to ask me the question a second time, he wanted to know if I knew what I was doing by deciding not to walk away. I looked him squarely in the eye, and I said "Yes I know what I am doing, I would like to take my daughter home your honor".

In that moment, with that sentence, I decided sacrifice, I decided tears, I decided rewards of single parent, I chose fatherhood!
The big city can make you grow up fast or it can cause you to be naive to the system that I had so long heard of. I thought I was street smart but I realized life was "smarter" as I received a wake up call when going through the process of to getting full custody and becoming a father.
