Falling in Love with Romeo and Juliet
John Frey presents a six-part course based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. You will view five videos showing adaptions for stage, cinema, ballet, opera and Broadway musical. The videos include Zeffirelli's movie Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare in Love, Gounod's opera Roméo et Juliette, Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet, and the movie West Side Story, based on the music of Bernstein and Sondheim.
Each session includes video segments, plus commentary and discussion. In addition there will be a review of the cultural, intellectual and religious background of Shakespeare's time.
Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet - the acclaimed movie starring Olivia Hussey, Leonard Whiting and Michael York; Shakespeare in Love - an Oscar-winning movie starring Gyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes, Colin Firth and Judi Dench; Gounod's Roméo et Juliette - an opera presented by the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden starring Roberto Alagna and Leontina Vaduva;
Shakespeare in Love -- a movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes, Colin Firth and Judi Dench.
Gounoud's Romeo et Juliette -- an opera presented by the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden starring Roberto Alagna and Leontina Vaduva.
Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet - a ballet presented by Teatro alla Scala starring Alessandra Ferri and Angel Corella; and Bernstein's West Side Story - an award-winning movie starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer and Rita Moreno. The final session will be devoted to an analysis of West Side Story and the background of it's development from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

This course will meet from 1-4 PM on Thursdays, October 11, 18, 25 and November 1, 8, 15.
