Refractions Dance Collective: Detachment

RDC's Detachment, is an evening of dance theatre including works by co-directors Sarah Donnelly and Charmy Wells and guest choreography by Frances Baca and Fabio Tavares Da Silva.

Detachment will include the full-length premiere of Charmy Wells' Unraveling. The piece is based on concepts of unwinding, referencing psychological unraveling and a process of detachment from objects that were once pivotal, even essential, to the individual. In this process of disillusionmentparticularly the dissociation from optimistic dependence on inherited values systems that are inherently damaging the female protagonist becomes unhinged and eventually detached from reality. What does it mean to lose one's mind? To act in contradiction to socially agreed upon values? To be in contradistinction to consensus?

The evening will also include the premiere of Sarah Donnelly's work Departure. The work is an abstract exploration of the transition between the end of one event and the beginning of the next. The piece is inspired by Ms. Donnelly's actual departure from her six-year tenure at the STREB Extreme Action Company. The work deals with physical extremes and attempts to organize the turmoil of transition.

RDC is a Brooklyn based dance company with the primary objective of creating performance and engaging community in the creative exchange of ideas and art. Founded in 2002, by Charmy Wells and Sarah Donnelly, the company has performed extensively in the New York Tri State area as well as in California, Washington DC, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The company has received commissions from The Streb Emerging Artists Commissioning Program, Consortium of the Arts, Northside Town Hall Community and Cultural Center, Dance Theater Etc., and Plymouth State University.
