The Life & Death of Queen Margaret
"The Life and Death of Queen Margaret" follows the story of Margaret of Anjou - a fierce, strong-willed, and independent woman who was both a historical figure and also one of Shakespeare's greatest characters. Her rise to leadership and subsequent downfall, portrayed through bitingly relevant and alarmingly prescient 400-year-old texts, hold a necessary mirror up to our modern society.
In a year when Hillary Clinton, campaigning for President of the United States, is not only vilified above and beyond her male counterparts for comparable behavior, but also has her physical body available for public discussion and judgment, Real Live Theatre brings you this 'new' Shakespeare play which examines what really goes on when women rise to power inside patriarchal systems.
The play was co-created by Toby Vera Bercovici and Dan Morbyrne in Summer 2015, after a months-long exploration into the world of 15th century England and France, Shakespeare's Henry VI and Richard III plays, and Margaret's particular history. It combines extant scenes from Shakespeare, scenes which are a patchwork of multiple Shakespeare plays, and occasional adaptor-written chunks of iambic pentameter. The company staged several readings of the play in September 2015 and received valuable audience feedback, after which Toby and Dan created the "final" version of the text.
Real Live Theatre's world premiere of The Life and Death of Queen Margaret will feature an all-female cast of eight. It will be performed at the Hallie Flanagan Studio Theatre at Smith College's Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts and is supported in part by the Northampton Arts Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
*There will be no late seating for this show. Please arrive on time!*
