Levitation as Performance Art: The Strange Case of St. Joseph of Cupertino, with Author Michael Grosso
Date: Wednesday, July 20th
Time: 7pm
Admission: $5
Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 Third Avenue, 11215 Brooklyn NY

In the annals of superpowers, the greatest and best documented example on record is probably the case of St. Joseph of Cupertino (Italy, 1603-1663). In tonight's talk, author Michael Grosso will present accounts of Joseph's reported marvels, especially his paradigm-busting levitations. Michael will demonstrate how the music, painting, sculpture, architecture and spiritual ferment of St. Joseph's day created the stage-set for bringing out these superpowers. It will also detail how The Saint's genius for ecstasy, obsession with the Madonna, and sexual sublimation led him to transcend a childhood of sickness and misery to achieve European superstardom as what might be described as a mystic performance artist. The talk will conclude with thoughts on what Joseph and his phenomena signify for seekers in an era of disbelief.

Michael Grosso is an independent scholar and artist, studied classics and got his doctorate in philosophy from Columbia University. He has taught philosophy and the humanities at City University of New York, Marymount Manhattan College, Kennedy University, and City University of New Jersey. His current interests are consciousness studies, extreme psychophysical phenomena, and the conceptual art of worldview-making. His books include The Final Choice, Frontiers of the Soul, Soulmaking: Uncommon Paths to Self-Understanding, The Millennium Myth; Irreducible Mind (co-author;ed. Ed Kelly];; Beyond Physicalism (co-author, ed.Ed Kelly; and most recent: The Man Who Could Fly: St. Joseph of Copertino and the Mystery of Levitation. Grosso is on the Board of Directors of the American Philosophical Practitioners Association (APPA).  For more, visit consciousnessunbound.blogspot.com
