Solemn Oath All-Grain Homebrew Class
Have you started brewing beers from malt extract at home? Are you tired of being underwhelmed with the results? Do you want complete control over the color, clarity, aroma, flavor, and mouthfeel of your beer?
Solemn Oath Brewery is hosting an all-grain homebrewing class just for you. And a couple dozen other people. Led by Solemn Oath Assistant Brewer and experienced educator Paul Schneider, this hands-on class will guide you through an all-grain brew from start to finish.
(Does this sound too advanced? Check out our beginners homebrewing class.)
This class will focus on learning how to do the careful work of extracting and converting fermentables in the mash. Instead of starting with dry or liquid malt extract, all-grain brewers start with the real deal: malted barley. The effects of time, temperature and mash density will be covered in depth, as well as the all-important steps of recirculating, sparging, and lautering. You will learn how to make wort that will make yeast happy. After all, brewers do work for the yeast.
We will tour the brewery to learn how homebrewing translates to full-scale production brewing, and we will certainly visit the taproom to stay nourished. The all-grain portion of the class will end around 2 PM, but if you want to stick around for the boil, grab a beer and hold on tight.
Topics covered: Ingredients - selecting and caring for malt and adjuncts Equipment - what's really necessary to get started all-grain brewing v. what's really nice to have Process - milling, mashing, recirculating, sparging, and lautering Recipes - why you should never buy all-grain recipe kits and how you can do better yourself by knowing your system Resources - a guide to local homebrew shops and clubs, books, magazines, free online recipe tools and calculators, etc.
Local homebrew shops are throwing in some coupons and we are including two beers from the taproom in your ticket price. Bam.
