Imagine a world where flight is more than just a metaphor for our desires, an art form that blurs the lines between floor and air....
This summer, The Paloma Projects returns to the city to present Elemental You, highlighting the groundbreaking genre of contemporary dance from the ground, up. Blending ancient and innovative aerial apparatus with contemporary movement, and set against a pulsating musical composition of strings and percussion, the audience is guided along on a multi-sensorial journey between floor and air, with complimenting liquid and pastry interludes over the course of a two-hour evening.
A conceptual, multidisciplinary, and international residency program, The Paloma Project develops site specific projects and intimate dance works that draw from a broad and global perspective.
Under the direction of choreographer Ninette Paloma, a select group of international artists are invited to partake in a movement exploration that weaves together ancient traditions with avant-garde sensibilities. Reflecting the inward relationship between a dancer and her space, between words and movement, the juxtaposition translates into a metaphor for the human condition.
With its lineage extended across a spectrum of contemporary dance and the aerial arts, Aerial Dance is a distinctive genre blending floor to air composition to create three dimensional phrases. Since its initial inception in 1975 with Motivity pioneer Terry Sendgraff, to the worlds first Aerial Dance Festival in Boulder, Colorado 25 years later, artists and companies across the globe continue to heighten the characterization of contemporary movement and the boundless potential of flight-bound dance that blurs the lines between floor and air.
Weaving a vibrant tapestry of contemporary movement and aerial dance, the three pieces reflect on the concepts of human detachment, primordial instincts, and the female condition, with tasting interludes scattered throughout. With quiet strength and grounded emotion, Elemental You will captivate your senses and leave you in the mood for love.
